Nov. 5, 2013

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt soccer senior Abby Carr was named to the 2013 SEC Soccer Community Service Team, as announced by league officials, Tuesday afternoon. The Community Service Team, in its 10th year, looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community.

Carr, a native of Miami Springs, Fla., transferred to Vanderbilt following her freshman year at Florida State.

This past summer, Carr joined more than 20 other Vanderbilt student-athletes in partnering with Soles4Souls on an eight-day service trip to Tanzania, Africa, to provide footwear and clothes to those in need.

The psychology major also led an initiative called Commodores Compete for a Cause, where each varsity team selected an organization to raise awareness and money for. The soccer team collected $1,300 for the Pulmonary Hypertension Association. Carr also volunteered with NEXT Steps at Vanderbilt as a peer mentor for students with learning disabilities.

The Vandy midfielder has also been an influence on the field, assisting at the Vanderbilt Soccer Camp and numerous postgame youth clinics.
