2013 FIL Women’s Lacrosse World Cup | Clare Lochary feature on Carey
OSHAWA, Ont. – Former Commodore standout Ally Carey and Team USA will open championship bracket play this morning at the 2013 FIL Women’s Lacrosse World Cup.
The top seeded Americans face Team Haudenosaunee at 11:30 a.m. CT. Semifinal games are scheduled for Friday with the tournament concluding with the championship game at 2 p.m. CT on Saturday.
Team USA carried a perfect 4-0 record through group play to earn the tournament’s top seed. Carey was named the Player of the Game in USA’s opening 17-7 victory over England last Thursday. The Bel Air, Md., native scored two goals and pulled a team-high six draw controls to help TEAM USA open the event with a comfortable win.
The Americans are looking to repeat as World Cup champions after winning the title in 2009. Former Commodore assistant Amber Falcone, the MVP of USA’s Tuesday win over Canada, was named the tournament’s Defensive MVP in 2009.
Carey is not the only Commodore taking part in this summer’s World Cup. Incoming freshman Caroline Peters has been representing Team Ireland at the event. The Irish squad went 2-2 in group play before falling to the Haudenosaunee yesterday, and will play in the consolation bracket beginning today at 10:30 a.m. CT.
Peters scored seven goals in group play and was named the Player of the Match in Ireland’s 16-5 victory over the Netherlands. The Rockville, Md., native led the squad in scoring in last summer’s European Championships with 19 goals.
