LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Despite five goals from senior attacker Carly Linthicum, the Vanderbilt lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 decision to Louisville Wednesday at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
Linthicum continued the torrid scoring pace that had propelled her to No. 2 in the nation in goals scored entering the week. She netted five goals for the fourth time in VU’s seven games, and has scored at least twice in every game
Junior Abby Wheeler added a hat-trick for the Commodores, who trailed by five at the half before pulling within two with 10:55 remaining in the second half. All three of Wheeler’s goals came off free-position attempts.
After leading 9-4 at the break, Louisville struck first in the second half to extend its lead to six goals. Vanderbilt then mounted a comeback, fueled by three goals from Linthicum, two of which were assisted by fellow senior Courtney Kirk.
But Louisville would stem the VU rally with three goals in four minutes to stretch its lead to five. Despite a pair of goals in the final minutes, the Commodores could not complete the comeback.
Louisville scored the game’s first three goals to take an early lead. The Cardinals grew their lead to seven before a pair of VU goals ended the first half. Linthicum, Wheeler, and freshmen Alexa Kunowsky and Amanda Lockwood each scored goals for the VU in the first half.
Senior goalkeeper.Chelsea Pasfield made 10 saves for the Commodores, marking her fifth time this season to reach double-digits in stops. Defensively, sophomore Alex Duckenfield and freshman Kelly Chandler each caused three UL turnovers. Junior defender Alyssa Dunlap had a game-high four ground balls.
Seven different Cardinals scored goals on the afternoon, paced by four tallies from Nikki Boltja. UL keeper Ashley Herbst saved 10 VU shots.
The Commodores return home to conclude Vanderbilt’s Spring Break week before playing host to Notre Dame on Wednesday, March 13, at 3 p.m. CT at the VU Lacrosse Complex.
