Burns Tranfers to Vanderbilt Women’s Soccer Program

6/2/2005

Brett Burns is transferring to the Vanderbilt Women’s Soccer program after playing one season at Virginia, Commodore Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill announced Thursday.

“We’re extremely fortunate to have Brett joining Vanderbilt,” Hill said. “She is very athletic and brings the exact personality and competitive spirit we’re looking for in our program.”

Burns, from Minnetonka, Minn., was a two-time All-State selection (2001 and 2002) and four-time All-Metro Conference honoree while attending The Blake School. Burns helped the Bears claim four conference titles and the 2000 state championship while recording a 65-8-4 overall mark. She assisted on the game-winning goal in the 2000 title game.

Burns, a 5-9 defender, saw limited action with the Cavaliers during her freshman season in 2004, taking part in six games. Virginia finished 17-3-2 overall last season, advancing to the second round of the NCAA College Cup.

“She had the opportunity to train with one of the best teams in the country at Virginia,” said Hill. “That experience will help propel her career here at Vanderbilt.”

Burns, who has three years of eligibility remaining, can play for the Commodores beginning this fall.

Her brother, Jamie, was a senior goalkeeper on the 2004 Vanderbilt men’s soccer team.
