Vanderbilt gets back in win column with sweep of Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s tennis showed no signs of rust after 11 days off, cruising to a 7-0 win over Belmont on Thursday at the Lummis Family Tennis Center.

Both teams split opening doubles matches at the bottom two spots, making the No. 1 position the deciding court. Despite trailing the entirety of the match, sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez and freshman Hoyoung Roh forced a tiebreaker at 6-6 against Sabi Roi and Stefan Vedovelli. The Commodore duo came through in the final frame, sinking their Bruin counterparts 7-4 to secure the doubles point. The result ends a stretch of four straight matches without taking the early advantage.

Several Dores raced out to first set leads, but it was freshman Jack Satterfield to put the first singles point on the board after a 6-4, 6 -1 takedown of Vedovelli. Junior Danil Panarin followed suit at No. 1 singles for Vanderbilt, defeating Roi 6-1, 6-1. Junior Hugo Coquelin notched the fourth match point against Morgan Woodson with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. From there, it continued to be all black and gold as the Dores pulled out their second straight shutout against Belmont for the first time since 2017 and 2019. Senior Nathan Cox’s win at Court 2 pushes him to 7-0, the longest singles streak of his career. Freshman Hwang Donghyun generated his first dual match victory at No. 6 singles, completing a 6-7 (6), 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) comeback versus Austin Yack for the final point of the contest.

It is the third consecutive season that Vanderbilt has started 6-2 under head coach Scott Brown. The Dores are back at home on Sunday for a doubleheader against Michigan State and Lipscomb.
