Larry Munson, whose unique play-by-play style captivated Vanderbilt sports fans for nearly 20 years before becoming the heartbeat of the Georgia Bulldogs, died Sunday night at age 89.
Munson called Vanderbilt games from the time he came to Nashville in 1947 until leaving for Atlanta and eventually the Bulldogs in 1966. In an era decades before professional sports came to Middle Tennessee, Munson was the voice of the Commodores. Vanderbilt Hall of Famer Clyde Lee has said that Munson’s electric descriptions of the games in Memorial Gymnasium were a contributing factor in his choosing to attend Vanderbilt. Munson, in turn, helped immortalize “Big Lee” and his teammates during a golden period of Vanderbilt basketball.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution compiled a beautiful obituary Monday, one that we will direct you to as we wish the Munson family our sincere condolences.
