Brett Lange Signs With Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Team

Vanderbilt head men’s golf coach Press McPhaul announced on Friday the signing of Brett Lange (The Marist School/Atlanta, Ga.) to a national letter of intent to play golf for the Black and Gold beginning in the fall of 2004.

Lange, a 2002 first-team and 2003 honorable mention Polo Junior Golf All-America selection as well as a member of the East squad at the 2003 Canon Cup, brings an impressive resume to the VU program. He has posted nine top-20 finishes in 13 events spanning the last two seasons, including a tie for second at the 2002 Chrysler American Junior Golf Association’s Boys Invitational and a deadlock for seventh at the 2002 Greater Hartford Jaycees Junior Classic.

The Atlanta, Ga., native also bested the top juniors in the nation, including current VU freshman Luke List, at the prestigious 2002 Western Junior Championship with rounds of 69-69-69-68 (275). The tournament was held at the Seaside Course in Sea Island, Ga., site of the 2004 Southeastern Conference Men’s Golf Championships. Held annually since 1914, the Western Junior boasts an illustrious list of former champions and medalists, among those PGA TOUR professionals Jay Haas, Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples.

“I am extremely excited to add another nationally-recognized player of this caliber to our program here at Vanderbilt ” said VU men’s golf coach Press McPhaul. “Brett possesses a solid work ethic, an outgoing personality and a special ability to raise his game to a different level during competitive situations, all of which will help him continue to grow and improve throughout his career here at Vanderbilt.

The VU men’s golf program will next take to the links from Feb. 8-10 at the Sawgrass Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla. The Commodores will look to add to the success of the fall season in which the Black and Gold posted three top-five finishes and grabbed the title at the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions in Knoxville, Tenn., with a 15-under par total of 849.
