Aug. 6, 2010

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tom Boysen, Vanderbilt assistant men’s tennis coach, has accepted the head coaching position at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville. Boysen, who arrived at Vanderbilt with Head Coach Ian Duvenhage just prior to the 2005-06 season, will also teach English and in addition to his tennis responsibilities.

“The opportunity to be a head coach, and to do it at a school as rich in academic and athletic history as MBA, enables me to fulfill a goal that I have had for quite some time,” Boysen said. “Although I am eager to start my new roles as head tennis coach and English teacher, my decision did not come easily or without much deliberation.”

During Boysen’s five seasons with the program, the Commodores made three NCAA Tournament appearances and reached the second round of the tournament in 2007 and 2008. This past season, Vanderbilt more than doubled its win total from 2009, finishing with a 13-11 record an another NCAA Tournament appearance.

“Tom was a great associate and friend and I am sad to see him go but I am happy for him as he enters this exciting new chapter of his life,” Duvenhage said. “It is a wonderful opportunity and I have no doubt he will make a success of it.”

Classes begin at MBA on Aug. 18.

“The leadership and guidance provided to me by people such as Lori Alexander, Candice Lee and Geoff Macdonald have been invaluable,” Boysen said. “I whole-heartedly know that without the hundreds of tennis, coaching and life lessons taught to me by Coach Ian Duvenhage I would never have gotten this opportunity at MBA. I am so grateful for the chance I have had to work for Ian and to work at Vanderbilt. I am and always will be a Commodore!”
