George Midgett is an assistant director of compliance in athletics at Vanderbilt University. Midgett, a Chicago native, received his bachelor’s degree from Fisk University in Nashville and earned a master’s in sport administration at Belmont University.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Hopefully as an associate director in athletics. I’d like to oversee a sports team.
If you didn’t work in sports what would you do?
I’d be a freelance graphic designer and a DJ on the side.
What was your first job?
I was 15 and got hired to work at a greeting card store. I looked in the newspaper, and just needed a job. It was probably the worst job I’ve ever had in my life. I worked there for two weeks. They played soft LiteFM music all the time.
If you could have dinner with three people living or dead, who would you choose?
Jackie Robinson, because we share the same birthday and I played baseball, so just hearing it from his standpoint and what he had to go through during his time would be really interesting. And just talking about baseball today would be cool. Ray Charles, just to see what life was like for him as a blind man and as a musician. I’d like to hear stories about the Harlem renaissance and meeting all those people. And the last person would be Bill Clinton, because I think he’s a cool dude.
What has been your most memorable Vanderbilt sports moment?
It would be two things. Shan Foster’s senior night when he scored 42 points. The game went to overtime and they needed every shot he hit to win that game. Or it would be when we won against Wake Forest in coach Franklin’s first year because I was at that game and we had been on the cusp of so many things. To see what we did against Wake with everything on the line, not only did we win but to share in that, was a big deal.
What was the last animated movie you saw and what is your favorite animated movie?
The last was Despicable Me. Best? That is tough, there are some very good ones. I would have to go on a limb and say Toy Story, Aladdin, and The Lion King.
What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
After a 30-minute conversation about all of the movie soundtracks in George’s iTunes library, as I was walking out the door he decided that Sister Act 2 was his favorite soundtrack.
