LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomores Adam Baker and Alex Zotov continued their improbable run through the doubles bracket on Saturday at the ITA Southeast Championships, advancing to the championship match.
The duo defeated Tennessee’s team of Boris Conkic and Matteo Fago in the semifinals and will face Georgia’s top-seeded tandem of Nate Schnugg and Jamie Hunt in Sunday’s final.
In singles play, the Commodores were paced by senior Nick Cromydas, who advanced to the round of 16 after posting wins in the round of 64 and the round of 32.
Cromydas opened the tournament in the round of 64 with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over Chattanooga’s Pavel Vostrikov. In the round of 32, Cromydas defeated Georgia’s Josh Varela, 6-4, 6-3.
Unfortunately, Cromydas’ run came to an end in the round of 16 when Kentucky’s Eric Quigley eliminated him, 6-4, 6-3.
The success of Cromydas was another bright spot in what has been a solid tournament for the Commodores. In addition to the success of Cromydas, Baker and Zotov, the team advanced six of eight players past the round of 128 in singles play.
Vanderbilt will continue play at the ITA Southeast Championships Sunday, beginning with Baker and Zotov playing in the finals of the doubles draw.
