BAKER, REYNOLDS, BROWN AND NIEMEYER SEE ACTION 11/11/2004 BAKER, REYNOLDS, BROWN AND NIEMEYER SEE ACTION NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Four players with connections to Middle Tennessee took the court during Day 3 of the $50,000 USTA Music City Challenger being held at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center on the campus of Vanderbilt University. In all, six matches featured players with Middle Tennessee ties, three in the singles main draw and three in the doubles main draw. Nashville native Brian Baker continued to shine in his hometown, defeating Denmark’s Kristian Pless 6-3, 7-6 (3). Baker’s win came one night after upsetting tournament No. 1 seed Kevin Kim. Baker will take on former NCAA Champion from the University of Illinois Amer Delic tomorrow night. Baker and doubles partner Rajeev Ram could not duplicate the winning effort, falling to American Cecil Mamiit and Danai Udomchoke of Thailand 6-4, 6-1. Bobby Reynolds, former Vanderbilt standout, took the court in doubles play. Reynolds’ match looked strangely similar to the finals of the 2003 NCAA championships in which the University of Illinois defeated Vanderbilt. Reynolds defeated Delic that day. On this day, Reynolds teamed with one of Delic’s Illinois teammates Brian Wilson to defeat Delic and American Eric Taino 2-6, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). Current Vanderbilt University player Scott Brown will face former U.S. Davis Cup team member Justin Gimelstob. The tour veteran Gimelstob put away brown 6-1, 6-4. Brown defeated Romanian Razvan Sabau yesterday. Former Middle Tennessee State University All-Immediately Fred Niemeyer fell in a third set tiebreaker against No. 8 seed K.J. Hippensteel. After taking the first set in a tiebreaker, Niemeyer eventually fell 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (4). Niemeyer was scheduled to compete in doubles, but was saw that effort cut short before it started when partner Glenn Weiner pulled out with an injury. After five seeded players fell in the first round of the tournament, No. 2 seed Janko Tipsarevic became the first to go in the second round, losing to Udomchoke 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. After two rounds, just two seeded players remain, those being No. 7 Weslie Moodie, and Hippensteel. The tournament is also serving as a donation point for the Boys and Girls Club of Middle Tennessee Racket Drive. Fans attending the tournament are asked to bring old or used rackets to be re-strung and used for Boys and Girls Club tennis camps. A silent auction is also being held continuously throughout the tournament raising funds for Gilda’s Club. General admission tickets are $10 at the door for through the championship matches Saturday.
