STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Adam Baker came through in the clutch for Vanderbilt as his victory in the No. 2 singles match pushed the Commodores past Santa Clara in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.Vanderbilt entered singles play behind 1-0 after dropping the doubles point, but won four of the six singles matches to defeat the Broncos, 4-3.
In doubles action, Baker and Ryan Lipman lost their match on court one, 8-5, to Kyle Dandan and Nichols Vinel. Alex DiValerio and Bryant Salcedo were defeated by the same 8-5 score in the No. 3 match.
Alex Zotov quickly tied the match at 1-1 after picking up a 6-3, 6-0 victory on court six. Santa Clara regained the lead again with a victory in the No. 5 match, but Ryan Lipman evened things up again with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Dandan on court one. Charlie Jones gave the Commodores their first lead of the afternoon after he picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over John Lamble in the No. 3 match.
On court four, Blake Bazarnik won his first set, 6-2, but Nicholas Vinel tied things up with a 6-3 win in the second set. Vinel came out with a victory after posting a 6-1 win in the tiebreaker set, and once again tied the match between Vanderbilt and Santa Clara.
Similar to Bazarnik’s match, Baker won his first set and lost his second, forcing a tiebreaker set. With the third set tied, 6-6, Baker prevailed in the tiebreaker, winning 7-3.
The Commodores host Memphis this Friday at 2 p.m. at the Currey Tennis Center. Admission is free to all fans.
