Senior goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday.

Bachtel continued her stellar play to help the Commodores earn four points against the leaders of the SEC’s Western Division.

On Friday against Auburn, Bachtel made a nine saves in the Commodores’ 1-1 tie against the Tigers. The nine stops were a season-high and the most she has registered since a 10-save performance more than two years ago (10/10/08 at Georgia).

She returned on Sunday to post a shutout — her sixth of the season — against Alabama by making four saves. Already the Commodores’ all-time leader in saves, Bachtel surpassed the 300-save plateau and currently sits with 305 career saves.

In the past two weeks, Bachtel led the Commodores to a 3-0-1 record, picking up a league-high 10 points over the past four games. Bachtel and the Commodores travel to Starkville, Miss., this Thursday to take on Mississippi State.

Vanderbilt’s 2010 senior class will be honored on Sunday, Oct. 24, at the VU Soccer Complex prior to the Commodores’ 2 p.m. game with Ole Miss.
