Austin falls in second round

TULSA, Okla. – After winning his first round match, Gonzales Austin then fell in the second round of the ITA All-American main draw on Thursday afternoon.

Austin and the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team have been in Tulsa since Sept. 29, and now must rely on the doubles pairing of Austin and Ryan Lipman who remain in the consolation bracket for doubles.

Austin was defeated in round two by Tulsa’s Japie De Klerk 6-4, 7-6 (6). The Miami, Fla., native advanced to the second round after beating Francisco Dias from George Washington Thursday morning 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

The duo of Austin and Lipman had a chance to keep Vanderbilt alive in the doubles main draw, but were defeated by Wake Forest’s David Hopkins and Amogh Prabhakar, 8-6.

Austin and Lipman now must navigate through the consolation to stay alive. They take on John Collins and Hunter Reese from Tennessee at 1:30 on Friday.

Vanderbilt will now begin preparing for the ITA Regionals, which run from Oct. 19-23 in Memphis, Tenn.
