PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore John Augenstein fired a second-round, nine-under par, 63, at the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Links to lead the Commodores at the Carmel Cup on Saturday in a round that pushed Vanderbilt three spots up the team leader board after the team carded a 17-under par, 343. Augenstein is in third place in the individual standings, four shots behind leader Hurly Long of Texas Tech, with a two-round score of 134 (71-63).
Augenstein, from Owensboro, Ky., had seven birdies, an eagle, and no bogeys in his round on Saturday to tie a program record for lowest score in a single round. He tied teammate Will Gordon, who carded a 63 twice (2016 Schenkel Invitational 3rd Round, 2016 SunTrust Gator Invitational 3rd round), Luke List, who fired a 63 at the 2004 Hyatt/Dorado Beach, and Hudson Johnson, who shot a 63 in 2008 at the Kauai Collegiate Cup.
Gordon and junior Patrick Martin also had rounds in the 60’s Saturday, with each carding a pair of 67’s respectively. Senior Theo Humphrey posted an even-par 72, and freshman Luke Zieman finished with a two-over par, 74 to post Vanderbilt’s other counting totals. Martin is in a tie for sixth on the individual leader board, while Gordon is tied for 10th.
Combined on Saturday, Vanderbilt counted 23 birdies and three eagles.
“The guys did a great job carrying over the momentum from yesterday’s finish into today’s round, which ultimately allowed us to have a good round,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “John, Gordo, and Patrick really played outstanding today, which was huge for our team. Each one of them did a good job staying patient through their rounds and I think that really allowed them to finish so well. I thought the entire group did a good job battling all the way to the end, which is a really good sign of their competitive character.”
As a team, the 17-under par score moved Vanderbilt into a tie for third with defending national champion Oklahoma, who was 10-under par for the day. For the tournament, the Commodores have a two-round total of 700 (357-343) and trail second-place Texas Tech by nine shots and first-place Oklahoma State by 12.
“Tomorrow’s round is important because it’s our next opportunity to compete and grow in our roles as players and coaches,” said Limbaugh. “I want us to be enthusiastic to have another day to compete and play such an amazing golf course.”
The third and final round will take place on Sunday at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
