Auburn Tops Vanderbilt

Sophomore quarterback Jay Cutler’s thirty nine-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Erik Davis in the third quarter was one of few bright spots for the Commodores as Vanderbilt fell to the Auburn Tigers 45-7 Saturday afternoon in Nashville.

After a scoreless first quarter, Auburn broke through and scored twice in the second.  Quarterback Jason Campbell passed for two touchdowns and the Tigers added a 21-yard field goal to make the score 17-0 at halftime.

Cutler’s touchdown pass three minutes into the third quarter provided the only offense for the Commodores.  Cutler finished the day with 121 yards on 10-of-20 passing.  Cutler also rushed for 14 total yards, including a 26-yard carry for a first down in the third quarter.

Auburn answered Vanderbilt’s offensive threat with two more touchdowns in the third, including Campbell’s 67-yard touchdown pass to Jeris McIntyre.  The Tigers added two additional touchdowns in the fourth quarter, running the final score to 45-7.

Vanderbilt was plagued with injuries throughout the day.  Junior tight end Curtis Brancheau and sophomore defensive back Kelechi Ohanaja went down with minor injuries, and senior tight end Dan Murphy was carted off the field with a severe concussion.  He is undergoing tests at the Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Senior quarterback Benji Walker entered the game in the fourth quarter and promptly threw an interception, which ended his day. Redshirt freshman quarterback Steven Bright followed Walker in the fourth quarter and went 1-of-2 for three yards total.

Junior tailback Norval McKenzie led the team with 43 yards rushing on 10 carries.  Sophomore running back Kwane Doster added 17 yards.  Davis contributed 40 yards on two receptions, including his 39-yard catch for a touchdown.  Brancheau added 36 yards on two receptions before his injury, and junior wide receiver Brandon Smith pitched in 13 yards.

Vanderbilt returns to action next Saturday as the Commodores hit the road for the first time in 2003. Vanderbilt heads to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on the TCU Horned Frogs at 6 p.m. Central.
