Ashby Named Academic All-American

Long snapper earned first-team accolades for the second time

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt football student-athlete Julian Ashby has been selected first-team Academic All-America by College Sports Communicators. The organization announced its annual team Tuesday morning.

Ashby has collected first team honors from CSC (formerly CoSIDA) for the second straight season, while the selection also gives Vanderbilt football a first-team pick for the second consecutive year.

Ashby served as Vanderbilt’s long snapper for all 12 games this season, executing 114 snaps. A semifinalist for the Patrick Mannelly Award, Ashby also recorded a tackle against South Carolina. He was pursuing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering last fall during his lone season at Vanderbilt and owns a 3.90 grade-point average as a graduate student. He was named to the SEC Community Service Team.

The Lilburn, Georgia, native graduated from Furman in three years. He recorded a 3.96 undergraduate degree while majoring in physics. With the Paladins, Ashby executed 363 long snaps in three seasons while twice earning Academic All-District honors to go with Academic All-America accolades in 2023.

It is the 18th time a Vanderbilt football student-athlete has been named Academic All-America and ninth first-team pick. Ashby gives Vandy a first-team selection in consecutive years after punter Matthew Hayball earned the designation a season ago. Hayball was Vanderbilt’s first football Academic All-American since 2002.

It marks the first time Vanderbilt football has produced an Academic All-American in consecutive seasons since 1987-89. Andy McCarroll earned second-team accolades all three years and was joined on the second team by DeMond Winston in ’87. The Commodores have not had first-team selections in back-to-back years since 1974-75 (Doug Martin in ’74 and Damon Regen in ’75).

Earlier this month, Ashby was among a school-record seven Commodores named Academic All-District by CSC—Ashby, Richie Hoskins, Langston Patterson, Nick Rinaldi, Cole Spence, Brock Taylor and Linus Zunk.
