by Rod Williamson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s busy January continues when it travels to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the Prairie View A&M Invitational Friday through Sunday. The event occurs at bowling’s International Training and Research Center.

Starting times
Friday – Five 5-game Baker Matches beginning at 10:45 a.m.
Saturday – Five traditional games beginning at 9:25 a.m.
Sunday – Remaining round-robin team game beginning at 8:25 a.m., followed by two championship best-of-seven Baker Matches beginning at 9:50 a.m.

Competing teams
If last week’s Northeast Classic was the biggest field of the year, this one is among the smallest with just 12 invitations, but it is power-packed. Five teams in the field have won a total of 14 NCAA Championships if one considers the new Jacksonville State program an extension of the old McKendree program.

Arkansas State (6), Jacksonville State (1), Louisiana Tech (9), Maryville (10), Nebraska (7), North Carolina A&T (5), Prairie View, Sam Houston State, Southern, Stephen F. Austin (9), Vanderbilt (2) and Youngstown State (3).

Vandy is the Prairie View defending champ
Vanderbilt has a history of strong performances at the ITRC, winning it last year and in 2012—highlighted by Brittni Hamilton’s 300 game. It was also runner-up in 2020 and 2021.

The last time out
The Commodores had a rough go at the Northeast Classic, placing eighth—the program’s lowest finish in years. With Mondays scheduled as non-practice, academic days all semester, the Dores had just two training sessions to work on cleaning up recurring mistakes.

Conference USA Championship details announced
Conference USA has announced that its first league championship will be held March 21-24 at the Colonial Bowling Lanes in Harahan, Louisiana. This is the first year for bowling in Conference USA after taking the handoff from the Southland Conference. Vanderbilt had won four Southland titles, the most of any league member.

New poll coming Feb. 8
The NTCA will conduct a new national poll at the end of the month with plans to announce the results Feb. 8.
