NASHVILLE, Tenn. – All-American kicker/punter Ricky Anderson has been selected as Vanderbilt football’s 2024 SEC Legend.
Anderson will be among 16 representatives from each league member honored the weekend of the 2024 SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. The SEC Legends are celebrated Friday, Dec. 6, in a reception at the College Football Hall of Fame, before being recognized during the game on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Anderson arrived at Vanderbilt as a walk-on and departed as a consensus All-American and the nation’s top kicker/punter. As a senior in 1984, he led the nation with a 48.2-yard punting average that stood as the SEC record for 34 years. It remains the second-best mark in conference history. He also booted a school-record 82-yard punt and made a school-record 16 field goals. The punt record still stands today, while the field goal record stood until 2012.
At the conclusion of his senior season, Anderson was named consensus All-American and All-SEC. He was selected to both the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game before being chosen in the 11th round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the then-St. Louis Cardinals.
Anderson departed Vandy as the program’s career leader in punting average (45.6 yards per punt), scoring (192 points) and field goals made (40). He is still tied for the school record with five field goal attempts in one game.
Anderson is the second Vandy punter to earn SEC Legend status, joining Jim Arnold who punted for the Dores from 1979-82 and was recognized in 2002.
