NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Commodore standout Ally Carey was selected fifth overall in the inaugural Women’s Professional Lacrosse League draft Wednesday night. Carey was drafted by the Upstate Pride with the last pick in the first round.
The WPLL consists of five teams: Baltimore Brave, New England Command, New York Fight, Philadelphia Fire and Upstate Pride. The five-team league is set to launch in the summer of 2018, with an exhibition weekend coming in the fall of 2017.
“The WPLL is a two-part operation: it is both a professional lacrosse league and a development program for rising talent in our sport,” said WPLL founder Michele DeJuliis. “Though our obvious focus is lacrosse development, our practicum – for both professional players and rising talent – prioritizes character development as means to excelling in life on and off the field.”
A native of Bel Air, Md., Carey is one of the most decorated Commodores in program history. She played at Vanderbilt from 2009-12 and was named an IWLCA First Team All-American her last three seasons. The program retired her No. 2 jersey after her stellar career where she finished as the all-time leader in draw controls (263) and ground balls (166). She also sits third in caused turnovers (110) and fourth in assists (69).
She recently led the US national team to a gold medal at the 2017 FIL Women’s World Cup in England. It was her second gold medal as part of Team USA as she was a member of the 2013 squad that won gold in Germany.
Carey is one of 10 Commodores named to the Vanderbilt Hall of Fame Class of 2017. They will be honored at the Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday, Sept. 8, 2017 at the Multipurpose Facility on campus.
