Ace In The Hole

Senior Wells Williams collects a hole-in-one to highlight Day 1 at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational for No. 6 Vanderbilt

FORT WORTH, Texas – Vanderbilt men’s golf senior Wells Williams collected a hole-in-one during Round 1 of the 2025 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, presented by Charles Schwab, as the All-American ended 36 holes of play on Monday tied for fourth place on the individual leaderboard with a two-round total of 2-under 138.

The No. 6-ranked Commodores wrapped up the first day of the 2025 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational tied for fifth place on the team leaderboard with No. 5 Texas, as both squads hold a score of 8-over 568. Vanderbilt opened Round 1 at 5-over 285, then finished Monday at 3-over 283. The Dores head into Tuesday’s final round nine strokes off the lead.

Williams slam dunked his tee shot on Hole 13 from 199 yards out to record his second collegiate hole-in-one. The West Point, Mississippi, native had an ace in his Vanderbilt debut during the 2023 spring season at the John Hayt Invitational. The senior rode that momentum throughout Monday, as Williams held round scores of 71-67 to conclude his first afternoon at Colonial Country Club at 2-under 138. Williams goes into Tuesday’s finale two strokes off the lead, as he was just one of seven golfers to end play on Monday under par.

“I was really proud of how the guys competed today,” said Vanderbilt Thomas F. Roush, M.D., and Family Men’s Golf Head Coach Scott Limbaugh. “We got off to a rough start this morning, but everyone hung in there and found a way to stay in the round. It was very impressive. This is a very demanding course, and you have to be able to stay locked in on a long day, which is tough to do.

“Obviously, Wells was really solid today and did a great job staying patient in Round 1, which really says a lot about his maturity as a player. He hung in there and got some momentum that carried him the rest of the day.  Jon Ed did a good job getting some momentum in the afternoon round, and our team had it going.  We didn’t finish the way we wanted on some difficult holes, but we are getting better and learning each time out.”

A pair of Vandy freshmen sit in a tie for 32nd after 36 holes of play at Colonial Country Club, as Michael Riebe and Jon Ed Steed hold a score of 4-over 144. Riebe’s eight birdies on Monday paced the Commodores, tying for fifth-most by any golfer in the field through the tournament’s first two rounds. Steed collected an eagle in Round 2, as he went 2-under on the par-4 Hole 10, leading him to finish at 2-under 68 over his final 18 holes of play.

No. 8 Virginia holds a two-stroke lead over the field after 36 holes of play at the 2025 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, as the Cavaliers ended Day 1 at 1-under 559. Virginia’s Ben James and Texas Tech’s Connor Graham are tied for the lead on the individual leaderboard at 4-under 136.

“Tomorrow is an important day for us because it affects where we want to go as a team,” Limbaugh expressed. “We need to show up ready to compete to our standards from the start and have all five guys playing with purpose and being intentional. These tournaments are fun, and I’m excited for the opportunity we have.”
