Fornia, Hawkins win weekly awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The American Athletic Conference recognized Vanderbilt lacrosse seniors Gabby Fornia and Melissa Hawkins on Monday as Fornia secured Attack Player of the Week and Hawkins took home Defensive Player of the Week.

Fornia tied the school record for assists in a game with seven Sunday versus High Point. The seven-assist performance came on the heels of a five-assist outing March 3 against Mercer.

The senior from Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, is also tied for the program’s career assist record with 88. It is the second weekly honor in Fornia’s career and first since earning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Feb. 20, 2018.

Hawkins put together back-to-back standout performances on the defensive end. In the win over Mercer, she accounted for five ground balls, one caused turnover and one draw control. She followed up with four ground balls and two caused turnovers in the victory against High Point.

Hawkins, who hails from Bridgewater, New Jersey, has 78 career caused turnovers, tied for the sixth-most in program history. The weekly honor is the third in Hawkins’ Vanderbilt career.

Also for her play during the week, Bri Gross earned a place on the AAC Honor Roll. Her week was highlighted by totals of 12 draw controls, three goals and three assists in the two games.

Next up, Vanderbilt hosts Kennesaw State at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Vanderbilt Stadium.
