#9 MG storms to 2nd in Cabo after shooting 11-under on Tuesday

Final Results

LOS CABOS, Mexico – The ninth-ranked Commodores stormed from fifth to second at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate after shooting a final round total of 273, a tournament low, in one of college golf’s most competitive fields of the year. Senior Hunter Stewart was Vanderbilt’s top finisher, ending the tournament with a three-round score of 208 (70-71-67), which was good for seventh on the individual leader board.

Vanderbilt had an incredible day at the Los Cabos Querencia in Los Cabos, Mexico, with the Commodores’ counting Stewart’s 67, a pair of 68’s from Theo Humphrey and Carson Jacobs, and a 70 from Matthias Schwab. The 273 was the Commodores’ second-lowest team score of the season behind a first-round 271 at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in October of 2014.

“All week we talked about staying patient, trusting in our plan, and good things would happen,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “The guys did a great job of believing that and we had the low round of the tournament in the most difficult conditions of the week. Hunter continues to play great and his leadership means so much for our team. Theo had a really solid week and it’s great to see Matthias out there and in control of his game. CJ played a great round that will help him gain some momentum going forward.”

Vanderbilt counted 17 birdies and an eagle on Tuesday at the par-71, 6,869-yard Los Cabos Querencia.

“This course demands toughness and resiliency and we displayed that all week,” said Limbaugh. “We are making the climb and each time this group plays together is an opportunity for us to grow. We need to take the same focus going forward that we had this week and embrace the opportunity that each player has to improve.”

Number-one ranked Florida State claimed the team title with a three-round score of 839 (275-287-277), eight shots better than the Commodores. Washington’s Cheng-Tsung Pan won medalist honors with a nine-under, 204 (68-67-69), defeating the Seminioles’ Rowin Caron by one stroke.

Vanderbilt returns to the course March 15-16 at the Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla.
