9/19/03 – Women’s Soccer Defeats Tennessee Tech 2-0

Nashville, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Commodores won its home opener Friday (Sept. 19) with a 2-0 victory over Tennessee Tech. Vanderbilt scored goals in both the first and second period to secure the shutout. Vanderbilt is now 3-2-1, while Tennessee Tech falls to 3-4.

Senior Michelle Bruntlett scored her first goal of the season at the 12:37 mark on an assist from senior Laura Hershenow. In the second half, Hershenow dribbled the ball down the middle of the field and hit a shot at the 65:33 mark to give VU the two-goal advantage. Senior goalkeeper Esther Thompson collected the shutout without facing any shots in the contest. Tennessee Tech totaled only two shots with none on goal.

On the other side of the ball, Tennessee Tech’s goalkeeper Carly King numbered 10 saves on 12 shots on goal from Vanderbilt.

The Commodores totaled 20 shots (12 on goal), led by senior Jen Talavera with 5, followed by Bruntlett and junior Molly Wilson with three each.

Vanderbilt takes on Western Kentucky Sunday (Sept. 21) at 4 pm or following the final game of the Vanderbilt Men’s Soccer Tournament.
