NAPLES, Fla. – The fifth-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team is one round away from repeating as champions at the Talis Park Challenge in Naples, Fla., after shooting an eight-under par, 560 (276-284) on Sunday at the Talis Park Golf Club. The Commodores lead second-place LSU by two shots heading into the final round on Monday.
Commodores sophomore Matthias Schwab was the team’s leader after shooting a five-under par, 137 (66-71) Saturday, which is good enough for fourth. Freshman Theo Humphrey is tied for fifth with a three-under 139 (69-70), with senior Hunter Stewart in a tie for seventh after carding a Sunday total of 140 (69-71). Carson Jacobs and Ben Fogler are each in a tie for 30th with each shooting a two-round score of 145, while Spencer Ciesla, who is playing as an individual, carded a 149 (75-74) and is in a tie for 51st.
“I thought the guys did a really good job of staying patient early on in the first round and that allowed us to play well coming in,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Matthias did a great job lifting the team up this morning as he continues to make strides in the right direction. Hunter and Theo were solid all day as well.”
Schwab is two strokes back of a trio of players tied atop the individual leader board.
“Tomorrow is important because it’s our next opportunity to compete and take another step towards being the team that we think we can be,” said Limbaugh. “We need to embrace that and continue to have the right focus on the right things.”
