49ers Fall Invitational comes to a close

The 49ers Fall Invitational came to a close on Sunday in Charlotte, N.C. with the final round of singles matches. Five Commodores were in action today, but Vanderbilt was unable to pick up a victory on the final day of the tournament before heading back to West End.

Panu Virtanen made it all the way to the consolation finals of the singles A1 draw after picking up a pair of wins on Saturday, but fell on Sunday to Ryan Dickerson of Duke by a score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. George Harwell was also in the A1 singles draw and fell in his final match of the tournament to Davidson’s Artem Khrapko; 6-4, 6-2.

Vanderbilt will be sending three athletes to the Oracle/ITA Fall National Championships in Palm Springs, Calif., which begin on Wednesday, Nov. 1 and will run through Sunday, Nov. 5. Daniel Valent earned a spot in the singles competition after winning the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championship, including a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tennessee’s Timo Stodder in the finals match. Lachlan McPhee and Billy Rowe received an at-large bid from the ITA selection committee after advancing all the way to the finals in the Ohio Valley Regional Championships.

The Commodores that aren’t included in the ITA Fall National Championships field will be traveling to Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational.
