Toby Wilt made his mark on Vanderbilt athletics – all while wearing two different uniforms.
Wilt, a 2017 inductee into the Vanderbilt Hall of Fame, enjoyed stints on the Commodores football and golf squads during his collegiate career. Wilt arrived at Vanderbilt on a football scholarship in 1962 and became a letterwinner on the roster from 1963-65.
With his football tenure winding down, Wilt, who played high school golf, decided to try out for the Dores’ golf team. The Evanston, Ill. native helped represent Vanderbilt at the SEC Championships during his senior season, and this year he enters the Hall of Fame as the only two-sport athlete in Vanderbilt’s 2017 class.
Wilt’s love for Vanderbilt did not wane following his graduation in 1966. He went on to establish the Toby S. Wilt Scholarship, which originally benefited the football program but now enhances head coach Scott Limbaugh’s golf program. The scholarship has been awarded to Commodore legends and PGA Tour pros Luke List and Brandt Snedeker, the latter a FedEx Cup champ and fellow Vanderbilt Hall of Fame inductee. Wilt has even teamed with Snedeker to win the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
Wilt served as a founder of the Golf Club of Tennessee and was inducted into the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame in 2017. Today Wilt is chair of the Tennessee Golf Foundation President’s Advisory Committee. Each spring, Wilt is the subject of a national television audience as the starter on the first tee at The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club.
All 2017 Vanderbilt Hall of Fame inductees will be honored during the Commodores’ home football opener against Alabama A&M on Sept. 9.
