It was quite a summer for Ally Carey in 2017.
In July, the former Vanderbilt lacrosse star led the U.S. national team to a gold medal at the 2017 FIL Rathbones Women’s World Cup in England. One month later, Carey became a first-round pick in the inaugural Women’s Professional Lacrosse League draft. The Upstate Pride selected Carey with the No. 5 overall pick in the draft on Aug. 25.
But Carey also secured a permanent place in Commodore history this summer, earning a spot in Vanderbilt’s 2017 Hall of Fame class.
Carey remains Vanderbilt lacrosse’s only three-time, first-team All-American. Following her prolific career from 2009-12, she left Vanderbilt in possession of multiple school records. Carey tops the Dores’ career list in draw controls (263) and ground balls (166) and also holds the single-season mark for draw controls (80). Carey is also third all-time in caused turnovers (110), fourth in assists (69) and sixth in goals (132).
Along with her All-America recognition, Carey was also a four-time all-conference honoree at Vanderbilt. She is one of just four Commodores to score at least 200 points (201), and she led the Dores with 32 goals and 42 points as a senior in 2012. Vanderbilt retired Carey’s No. 2 jersey following the culmination of her playing career.
Carey’s gold medal with Team USA in July was her second-career gold with the Red, White and Blue. She helped Team USA secure a top podium spot in Germany in 2013, as well. Carey’s career with the five-team WPLL begins in the summer of 2018, with an exhibition weekend coming in the fall of 2017.
All 2017 Vanderbilt Hall of Fame inductees will be honored during the Commodores’ home football opener against Alabama A&M on Sept. 9.
