Vanderbilt returns to their home floor this Thursday when the Georgia Bulldogs come calling to Memorial Gym in an SEC East match up. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. CT, and the game can be seen live on ESPNU. The radio call can be heard on the Vanderbilt-ISP Radio Network and vucommodores.com, with Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson courtside with all of the action.
The Commodores had their 19-game home winning streak snapped by Kentucky on February 20 in their last time out in a game the Wildcats won, 58-56. Vanderbilt had a last second shot to tie the game by A.J. Ogilvy rim out, and Kentucky escaped with the win. The Commodores shot only 32.1% from the field and 10.0% from three in the game, but also held Kentucky to a 35.8% clip and 18.8% from beyond-the-arc. Vanderbilt outrebounded Kentucky, 40-36 – it marked the first time in 13 games this year that the Commodores have lost a game when they have outrebounded their opponent.
VU was led by sophomore forward Jeffery Taylor, who scored 17 points. Taylor was the only Vanderbilt player in double figures. Sophomore forwards Andre Walker and Steve Tchiengang led the team on the glass with eight rebounds apiece. The eight rebounds was a new career-high for Tchiengang.
Vanderbilt and Georgia will meet for the second time this season and the 130th time in the history of the series. Georgia won the earlier meeting in Athens on February 6, 72-58, behind a pair of 17-point efforts from Travis Leslie and Trey Thompkins. Vanderbilt was held to only 32.8% shooting in the first matchup between the two teams, and was outrebounded by the Bulldogs, 43-28.
Jermaine Beal leads a very balanced Commodore offensive attack with 14.4 points per game. Jeffery Taylor is next at 14.2 points per game, with A.J. Ogilvy (13.7) and John Jenkins (10.0) also averaging double figures.
Georgia enters the game with a 12-13 overall record and a 4-8 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs won their most recent game out, a 76-70 decision over Alabama on Saturday in Athens.
Trey Thompkins leads the Bulldogs heading into the contest with a 17.6 scoring average. Travis Leslie (14.2) and Ricky McPhee (10.0) also average double digits for Georgia. Thompkins is the leading rebounder for Georgia, averaging 8.2 rebounds per game.
