The Vanderbilt men’s golf team head into this weekend’s SEC Championship in Sea Island, Ga., as the number one seed of the tournament for the first time in the history of the program and will tee off Friday morning at 7:30 ET on the par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club’s Seaside Course, the home of the PGA Tour’s McGladrey Classic.

The Commodores will play with #2 seed South Carolina and #3 LSU in the first-round pairings Friday.

“Having the opportunity to play for an SEC Championship is always exciting,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “Sea Island is a great host and we always look forward to having the opportunity to compete there.”

Vanderbilt will be playing in their 50th consecutive SEC Championship, and will enter the tournament fifth in the nation according to Golfstat.com, their highest ever ranking entering the event.

The Commodores will send senior Hunter Stewart, who was recently named as a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, juniors Carson Jacobs and Zack Jaworski, sophomore Matthias Schwab, and freshman Theo Humphrey to the tournament.

“Our focus has been on continuing to take the right steps as a team and get a little better each day,” said Limbaugh. “We want to carry some of the momentum that we have gained and continue to try to be the best version of us.  This is the next step on the ladder and we need to go have fun, be excited, positive, and embrace it.”

The 14-team features four of the nation’s top 25 teams, and eight in the top 40, and will be one of Vanderbilt’s stiffest tests of the season.

Vanderbilt’s best finish at the SEC Championship came in 2002 and 2004, when the Commodores finished in fourth place on both occasions.
