Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational second round results

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Junior Courtney Zeng matched a collegiate career-best round Saturday, leading the Vanderbilt women to an impressive double-digit improvement over their performance one day earlier at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational.

Zeng, a product of the First Academy in Orlando, Fla., produced the team’s low individual score with a three-under par 69. It matched her previous best set earlier this year at the Mason Rudolph.

Zeng had plenty of support Saturday at the University of North Carolina Finley Golf Course layout. All five Commodores participating Saturday improved on their opening round score. The result was a team score of 284 — 14 strokes better than Friday.

The Commodores enter the final round in 12th among 18 teams with a total score of 582. They are just four strokes out of eighth place.

Head coach Greg Allen was proud of his squad’s performance after a tough opening round.

“I am really proud of the way we responded today,” Allen said. “We looked more like the team we’ve seen the last couple months. “Everybody looked steady all day, Obviously the scores were low today but right now we are staying focused on doing the things we need to do to keep getting better each day.”

Zeng has been the low Commodore Friday and Saturday. Her 69 on Saturday featured four birdies and a lone bogey. Zeng enters the last round tied for 21st in the individual competition with a two-under par total of 142.

Sophomore Abbey Carlson fashioned a two-under par 70 after a disappointing 77 Friday. The round included three birdies and a bogey.

Freshman Morgan Baxendale closed her round with a birdie to post a even-par 72. Senior Alexandra Farnsworth also came back strongly from a disappointing opening-round score with a one-over par 73.

Freshman Virginia Green closed the Commodore scoring matching Farnsworth’s 73.

Freshman Louise Yu, participating in the individual competition, finished with a five-over par 77.

The final round will be played Sunday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT.
