Vanderbilt freshman Courtney Zeng fired a team-low even-par 72 on Friday in the second round of the Shoal Creek Regional in Birmingham, Ala., and the Commodores as a team are in a tie for eighth place with Clemson University with a total of 618 (302-316) in the team standings. With the top six teams advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Vanderbilt is still within reach of the cut line, trailing sixth-place California by four shots heading into the final round on Saturday.
Zeng is in a tie for sixth place with a four-over par, 148 (76-72) in her two rounds, while teammate Jennifer Hahn is two places behind in a tie for eight with a score of 149 (70-79). Both Zeng and Hahn, who are two of the top three individuals not associated with the top six teams, would qualify individually for the NCAA Championship if the tournament ended Friday.
For the day, Vanderbilt counted Zeng’s 72, Hahn’s 79, sophomore Alexandra Farnsworth’s 80, and junior Kate Sborov’s 85.
“As poorly as we played, I think we are ecstatic that we’re only four back of the cut line,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Thank goodness for Courtney Zeng today. The girls are upbeat about the challenge tomorrow and know we need to stay in the moment and stick with the process.”
Northwestern leads the tournament with a two round score of 14-over, 590 (296-294), six shots better than second-place Florida State. Rounding out the top six is Oklahoma State, Alabama, Tennessee, and California.
Individually, Matilda Castren of Florida State and Kacie Komoto of Northwestern lead all individuals with each at one-over par, 145.
The third and final round of the Shoal Creek Regional concludes on Saturday.
