The meet proved to be a historic day, as Vanderbilt freshman Caroline Pietrzyk finished third with a time of 17:04.80, which represented the best performance by a Vanderbilt athlete in the 30-plus-year history of Vaughn’s Gap and was the No. 5 all-time mark at the course. Two other runners also put their names in the Vaughn’s Gap record book, as Michigan standout Erin Finn set a new all-time course record while winning the meet with a time of 16:43.40, and second-place finisher Marta Freitas of Mississippi State set the course’s No. 4 all-time mark with a time of 17:02.20.

The VU women — who held steady in the latest USTFCCCA poll at No. 22 overall and No. 1 in the South Region — finished second at the Classic, and the men finished 14th.

Next up for the Commodores is a visit to South Bend, Ind., on Oct. 2 for the Notre Dame Invitational.
