NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt cross country teams will travel to Louisville, Ky., this weekend to participate in the 9th annual Greater Louisville Classic, held at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park on Saturday, Oct. 2. The men’s 8000-meter gold race will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT while the women’s 5000-meter gold race is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. CT.

“The last two weeks of training have gone really well for both the men and women,” said head coach Steven Keith. “We have had no real setbacks and a lot of positive work at practice.”

The Commodores will face over 300 runners in each race, as there are 39 teams in the men’s race and 36 teams in the women’s race.

“The women will get a chance to see four other SEC rivals in Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Mississippi State,” said Coach Keith. “How well we match up with these teams, especially Georgia (ranked No. 4 in the NCAA South Region) and Kentucky will be a good gauge on our progress this season. Other teams to look for on the women’s side will be Missouri, host Louisville, Georgia Tech and both Western and Eastern Kentucky.”

At the 2009 Greater Louisville Classic, the Vanderbilt women’s team finished sixth out of 35 teams, while the men finished 30th. Kristabel Doebel-Hickok clocked a time of 17:55.46, good for 17th place out of nearly 300 competitors. Jenner Kizer paced the men with a time of 25:36.60, finishing 77th out of 334 runners.

The women’s team will be wearing pink uniforms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
