WXC Places 10th at Notre Dame 9/30/2005 South Bend, Ind. — The Vanderbilt women’s cross country team earned a 10th place finish in the 50th Annual Notre Dame Invitational Friday. Leading the Commodores was Erika Schneble with an impressive time of 17:34 (22nd) on the 5k course. Following closely behind were the solid performances of junior Amy Huss and sophomore Julie Eckerly with times of 17:47 and 17:50, respectively. Rounding out the Vanderbilt top five were Ashleigh Wetzel (18:21) and Shannon Capps (18:35). “This was a good starting point for us as a team,” said Capps, “We saw better competition. It showed us where we would like to be at the end of the season.” Debbie Huss (18:59), Carmen Mims (19:09) and Val Kazmer (19:13) also ran in the elite Blue Division. Seniors Stephanie Madia and Molly Huddle of Notre Dame finished in the top two spots (16:36 and 16:39), while the University of Michigan claimed the team title with a total of 77 points. Two Commodores, Whitney Thurman and Ashley Anderson, competed in the open race finishing with times of 19:02 and 19:31. “It was a good opportunity for us to run against some strong competition and be able to beat four nationally ranked teams,” said Thurman. The Commodores will compete next at the Pre-National Championship in Terra Haute, Ind. on October 15 at 12 Noon. |
