Commodores claim individual, team titles at Mason Rudolph Championship

Franklin, Tenn. — The women’s golf team won the rain-shortened Mason Rudolph Championship on Sunday after third-round play was cancelled at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.  With heavy rain keeping golfers off the North Course Sunday, results reverted back to 36-hole results, giving the Commodores a 12-shot margin over Arizona State with a 17-under par total of 599 (278-281).

Vanderbilt junior Abbey Carlson also captured her first individual collegiate win after she fired back-to-back 6-under par rounds of 66 to post a 132 total. She won the medalist honors by five shots over a pair of Wake Forest players, Emilia Migliaccio and Siyun Liu.

The team win is the first for the Commodores at the Mason Rudolph Championship since the 2014 edition of the event and the third time Vanderbilt has won their home tournament (other win came in 2002). Carlson is the third Vanderbilt individual to win the event, joining Jennifer Hahn in 2014 and Courtney Wood in 2002.

It marks Vanderbilt’s initial win of the season and first since claiming the 2018 Brickyard Collegiate in Macon, Ga. a year ago. It is also the ninth victory of the Greg Allen era and the 24th for the program overall. Carlson is Vanderbilt’s first medalist since Morgan Baxendale won the Brickyard in 2018 and the 14th Commodore to claim an individual championship.

“I’m just so dang proud of our girls and what they did this weekend,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen, who won his second Mason Rudolph Championship as head coach of the Commodores.  “It’s not always that easy to win your home event and they handled everything exceptionally well. I’m really happy for Abbey. She’s worked really hard since stepping on campus her freshman year, academically and at the golf course. It’s nice to see that pay off for her.”

Other Commodore finishers included a 141 (69-72) from freshman Auston Kim, who finished in a tie for seventh, a 143 (71-72) from freshman Annie Kim, who finished in a tie for 15th in her first collegiate tournament, a 145 (74-71) from sophomore Louise Yu, and a 146 (72-74) from senior Courtney Zeng.

“My hats off to Jarrod, Micah, Kass and the entire staff at the Vanderbilt Legends Club,” said Allen.  “They always do a first-class job of running the Mason for us. The golf course always looks like a Tour event! A special thank you to Allison and Tony with the TGA and their rules officials and David and Sally Maples, Bob Mannery and Terry Campbell and all the volunteers. They were champs handing all the weather delays.”

Vanderbilt returns to the course October 12-14 at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
