NASHVILLE – Autumn Newby obliterated her previous career-high of 16 points with a 30-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team in a 74-71 loss to North Alabama Tuesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

How It Happened
First Quarter: North Alabama 28, Vanderbilt 11
North Alabama shot 75 percent from both the field and 3-point range in the quarter. The squad opened up the contest on a 12-2 run to take the early advantage. The trend continued as the Commodores found themselves in a 28-11 hole at the end of the period.

Second Quarter: North Alabama 39, Vanderbilt 34
The Lions took the first four points of the quarter. Vanderbilt responded with a 12-2 run of its own that began on a Newby jumper and ended after a made free throw by Chelsie Hall, 34-23. The Commodores scored the final six points of the half to draw within five, 39-34, while holding North Alabama to just 26 percent from the field and zero from beyond the arc.

Third Quarter: North Alabama 60, Vanderbilt 53
Newby opened the second half with seven points to give the Commodores their first lead of the contest, 41-40. The squads exchanged points down the stretch, but North Alabama scored eight unanswered in 40 seconds to take a 58-51 lead with 1:21 remaining in the quarter. Brinae Alexander found the basket, but an Ivy Wallen layup set the score for the stanza, 60-53.

Fourth Quarter: North Alabama 74, Vanderbilt 71
The teams took part in another back-and-forth battle throughout the entire quarter. With 12 seconds remaining, Newby sank a pair from the charity stripe to come within striking distance, 73-71. After fouling, North Alabama missed 1-of-2 from the free throw line to make it a three-point game. The Commodores missed the attempt to tie, sealing the final score.

Inside the Lane
North Alabama edged Vanderbilt from the field, shooting 42.9 percent compared to 41.4 percent.
-Jordyn Cambridge has not played in a game in almost two years, but collected five points, five rebounds and two steals tonight in her collegiate debut.
-Brinae Alexander collected 11 points in her collegiate debut.
-Hall collected 10 points in game one of her sophomore campaign, her 20th career game in double-digits.
-Vanderbilt topped UNA in the paint (44-to-42) and took advantage of 17 second chance points compared to the Lions’ seven.

A Noteworthy Night
Sophomore Newby posted a career-high 30-point, 10-rebound effort on the night. Her previous high was 16 points against Lipscomb last season. This was Newby’s second career double-double. Vanderbilt last recorded a player with 30 points on Nov. 24, 2017, when Rachel Bell scored 31 against Syracuse.
