Commodores fall to No. 17 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – Chelsie Hall (14), Cierra Walker (17) and Mariella Fasoula (12) each netted double-digits to lead the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team in a 74-54 loss to 17th-ranked NC State Thursday night in Reynolds Coliseum.

How It Happened
First Quarter: NC State 16, Vanderbilt 15
The squads exchanged points nearly the entire quarter, until Chelsie Hall knocked down a jumper to put the Commodores ahead four, 15-11. The Wolfpack scored five in a row to close out the quarter and take the lead 16-15.
 
Second Quarter: NC State 37, Vanderbilt 23
After opening baskets by both teams, NC State scored 10 unanswered to go up 11, 28-17. Hall buried back-to-back jumpers to cut the lead to seven, 28-21, but the Commodores were unable to stop a hot-shooting Wolfpack team. NC State shot 58 percent from the field and 60 percent from three in the second.
 
Third Quarter: NC State 57, Vanderbilt 39
Vanderbilt cut the lead to 10, 41-31, to open the half, but NC State was lethal from beyond the arc to keep in front. The Wolfpack outscored the Commodores 8-2 over the final 2:42 of the quarter to take an 18-point cushion headed into the final frame.
 
Fourth Quarter: NC State 74, Vanderbilt 54
Following suite with the first half, NC State shot 58 percent in the second half, but shot 60 percent from three. The Wolfpack closed the contest on a 7-1 run, burying a triple to set the final score, 74-54.
 
Inside the Lane
-Mariella Fasoula collected her first double-double as a Commodore with 11 rebounds to assist her 12 points.
-Cierra Walker drained a season-high five triples.
-NC State edged Vanderbilt from the field, 47 percent to 35 percent.
-The Wolfpack out-rebounded the Commodores 43-to-37.
-Vanderbilt edged the Wolfpack in steals 9-to-7.
-Vanderbilt moves to 1-3 on the season while NC State remains perfect at 3-0.
