CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The No. 17/20 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team returns to regular season action this Saturday, Nov. 19, for a game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Commodores (1-1) last action came in an exhibition contest against EA Sports.

A scheduling quirk had Vanderbilt playing two regular season games in the middle of a pair of exhibtion matchups. VU opened the 2005-06 preseason with a warm-up game against NCAA Division II Anderson College before travelling to the WBCA/BTI Classic for two official games against Arizona State and Clemson. The following week, it was back to exhibition action, as the Commodores hosted EA Sports.

From here on out, the games all count. Vanderbilt picks back up with its regular season slate, travelling to Corpus Christi, Texas, for the first time in program history.

In Tempe, Vanderbilt dropped its regular season opener to host Arizona State, 69-60. The Commodores rebounded the following day in the tournament’s consolation game with an 86-49 win over Clemson. Sophomore center Liz Sherwood earned All-Tournament honors in Tempe, leading the Commodores with 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Through the first two games, five other Commodores are averaging at least nine points an outing. Junior Cherish Stringfield scored 12 points against ASU before sitting out the Clemson game to rest a leg injury. Senior Nicole Jules and juniors Dee Davis and Carla Thomas each averaged 10 points per game, while junior Caroline Williams scored nine points per game.

Vanderbilt shot 54 percent from the field in its first two games, but managed to hit only 29 percent from behind the arc and 70 percent from the free throw line.
