Liz Sherwood

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — A career high 21 points from senior Nicole Jules led the No. 19 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team to a 70-57 win over La Salle Thursday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.

Jules made the most of her second career start, filling in for junior Carla Thomas who suffered a minor concussion on Tuesday against North Carolina.

Sophomore Liz Sherwood was the only other Commodore in double-figures, adding 16 points. Sherwood connected on 7-of-7 attempts in the first half and scored her first 10 points in only seven minutes.

Jenna Graber led the Explorers with 12 points. Davineia Payne had 11 on her way to joining the school’s 1,000-point club.

Junior guard Dee Davis dished out eight assists, strengthening her hold on the Southeastern Conference lead. Freshman Holly Rogers tied a career high with seven points.

The Commodores used their dominant inside presence to open up a 20-point lead at halftime. Sherwood poured in 14 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the floor, while Jules had 13, including Vanderbilt’s final nine points of the half.

The Commodores have some time off for the holidays before returning to action on Friday, Dec. 30, playing host to William & Mary at Memorial Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. CT tip-off.
