Women’s Hoops Downs Miami-Ohio

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Junior Caroline Williams scored a team-high 22 points, all of them coming in the first half, to lead the No. 20/21 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team over Miami University, 82-50, Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.

Four Commodores reached double-figures, with junior Carla Thomas and sophomore Liz Sherwood scoring 14 apiece and junior Cherish Stringfield pouring in 13 in the second half. Cindi Merrill led the RedHawks with a game-high 23 points.

Junior point guard Dee Davis dished out 10 assists for the Commodores — her second double-digit perforamce in the last three games. As a team, Vanderbilt had 21 assists and only 12 turnovers, while turning 20 RedHawk turnovers into 29 points in transition.

The Commodores opened the game on a 13-1 run, holding Miami without a field goal until the 14:48 mark. Vanderbilt took a 40-17 lead into the break behind Williams’ 22 first-half points.

Vanderbilt (8-2) now takes a 10-day hiatus during final examinations before travelling to face No. 6 North Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
