Women’s Golfers Third at Cougar Classic

9/12/2005

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sophomore Liebelei Lawrence shot a career best two-under par 70 and freshman Jacqui Concolino matched her three-over par tournament total to lead Vanderbilt to a third place showing at the Cougar Classic Monday.

The Commodores were two-over par for the day to finish behind Tennessee and Georgia in the 17-team field. Auburn was fourth to complete the SEC domination in the top spots.

Individually, Concolino and Lawrence tied for ninth place with 219 totals, seven shots off the winning pace of Marci Turner of Tennessee. It was Lawrence’s first Top 10 finish.

Lawrence’s play was steady during Sunday’s 36 opening holes but the Luxembourg native saved her best for last. She began her round on No. 4 and after notching a birdie on the par 3 sixth, she double-bogeyed the par 5 seventh.

From that point, however, she notched five more birdies against a pair of bogeys.

Concolino had a roller-coaster round with five birdies offset by five bogeys.

Chris Brady, who’s 68 tied a tournament record yesterday, closed with even par 72 to place 13th while freshman Amber Lundskog and junior Kristen Svicarovich added a pair of 76s.

“I was very pleased with our play,” Coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “Liebelei played the way we have always known she can play and our two freshmen contributed a lot, which we also anticipated. This is an excellent way to begin the season; now we return home to host the Mason Rudolph Championship (Sept. 23-25, Vanderbilt Legends Club).”
