Women’s Golf Travels to Oregon 9-16-04 9/16/2004 Vanderbilt’s defending Southeastern Conference women’s golf champions travel northwest to open their season Monday at the NCAA Fall Preview, hosted by Oregon State University. Twenty-one teams, including defending national champion UCLA, will play 54 holes over The Meadows Course in Sunriver, Ore. The Meadows is a par 71, 6,300-yard layout. The Commodores have a new look. Gone are All-Americans Sarah Jacobs, Courtney Wood and May Wood and in their place are freshmen making their collegiate debuts in the strong field. “We are certainly young this year,” Coach Martha Richards Freitag says about her new team, “but with youth come enthusiasm and the excitement to learn and improve. We are looking forward to the year.” The Commodores only experience rests with two talented sophomores who played in every tournament last year, helping win five team titles and place fifth in the NCAA Championships. Second team all-SEC performer Chris Brady and Kristen Svicarovich, who made the NCAA Central Region all-tournament team, will lead a trio of freshman including Leibelei Lawrence, Julie Bartholomew and Devon Unkeless. The Fall Preview, held annually on the same course as next spring’s NCAA Championships, will be played Monday through Wednesday with a practice round Sunday. Competition begins at 8:00 a.m. Monday and Tuesday, although tournament officials have cautioned that frost delays this time of year are commonplace. |
