Women’s Golf Team Finishes Seventh at NCAA Preview

9/14/2003

Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team finished seventh at the 18-team NCAA Fall Preview Sunday in Opelika, Ala. Host Auburn and Duke tied for the team championship. The Commodores finished well ahead of other SEC competitors Florida, Georgia and Tennessee in this event.

Sophomore May Wood shot even-par for the 54 holes after an even-par 72 Sunday. She finished tied for eighth individually, five shots behind Pepperdine’s Carolina Llano, who fired a torrid 66 Sunday. Wood had four birdies but suffered a double bogey on No. 14.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Senior Sarah Jacobs added a two-over 74 Sunday to end her tournament seven-over par in 26th place. Commodore freshman Chris Brady continued to play solidly, shooting 76 to conclude her first college tournament 12-over. Courtney Wood, a first-team all-SEC performer, could not get into the scoring groove and shot 77, as did freshman Kristen Svicarovich to complete the Vanderbilt competitors.

“It was not a bad start for our season but it was nothing fancy,” said Coach Martha Freitag. “We learned a lot about this course and will take advantage of that next May when we play it again. We beat some very good teams but we know we can play better. Right now our thoughts are to go home and work hard on our game. We are hosting a great field (Mason Rudolph Championship Sept. 26-27-28) and we want to be ready.”

Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team is tied with UCLA for sixth place at the NCAA Fall Preview in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Opelika, Alabama after 36 holes. The Commodores are 24-over par with Arizona the team leader at seven-over in this elite 18-team field.

Sophomore May Wood continues to lead the Vanderbilt individuals. The Chattanooga native is tied for sixth place individually at even par after firing a one-over 73 to go with her opening day 71. Sarah Jacobs had a solid round of 74 to leave her five-over for the tournament while Courtney Wood had a rare off day. Her round included one double bogey and six bogeys — five on the back nine — against no birdies.

Commodore freshman Chris Brady, who had a solid 74 in Friday’s opening round, came back with a 78, while classmate Kristen Svicarovich struggled in with an 83 after suffering a double bogey and quadruple bogey during her back nine.

Erica Blasberg of Arizona added a 70 to her opening 71 and leads the event by one shot at three-under par. The tournament ends with tomorrow’s round.

“We fought hard all day but never quite got it going,” said Coach Martha Freitag. “May and Sarah had good rounds. Courtney had a tough day with her putter.” Tomorrow’s final round is a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

Day 1

Vanderbilt’s sixth ranked women’s golf team was tied for fourth place after the first day of the 54 hole NCAA Fall Preview Tournament being played in Opelika, Alabama. All ten of the nation’s Top 10 teams are in the rugged 18-team field for this prestigious competition. Last year Vanderbilt was tied for second in the tournament.

Leading the way for the Commodores was sophomore May Wood, who birdied two of her first three holes and then crafted a string of nine pars before registering her first bogey of the day. She ended her day with a one-under 71 and is tied for seventh individually.

Senior Sarah Jacobs and Courtney Wood both had a couple of small rough patches that kept them from suburb scores. Wood had three bogeys and just one birdie on her opening nine and finished with a 75. Jacobs, known for her consistency, had six bogeys and two birdies to end up at 76.

Two Vanderbilt freshmen made successful college debuts. Chris Brady of Cary, N.C., began on No. 10 and quickly found herself four-over par after four holes, only to shoot three-under over the next eleven. She birdied No.’s 3,4 and 6 during one stretch to get back to one-over par and finished her first round with a very impressive two-over 74.

Kristen Svicarovich of Hillsboro, Ore., also began on No. 10 and made the turn at two-over par, only to double bogey No. 6. The west coast newcomer had two birdies to offset two double-bogeys and finished four-over par.

Host Auburn is leading the team standings at two-under par while Duke’s Brittany Lang posted a five-under 67 to lead all individuals.
