Women’s Golf Signs Lawrence 11/18/2003 Vanderbilt women’s golf coach Martha Freitag has announced the signing of Liebelei Lawrence, a European native who is now living in Bradenton, Florida. “Liebelei is a great addition to our program,” Freitag says. “She fits exactly the mold of what we are looking for. She has a fantastic golf swing, yet she has only been in the United States for a year and her game is still rapidly improving. She is someone to watch in collegiate golf and she will help us continue to be one of top teams in the country.” Lawrence was born in Greece and grew up in Luxemburg, where she was a member of the Girls National Team. She was also a member of the Greek National Team. Lawrence said she considered Texas, Ohio State, Florida and Cal-Berkeley before choosing Vanderbilt. “I selected Vanderbilt for two main reasons,” Lawrence said. “First, Coach Freitag had the attitude I was looking for. She brought Vanderbilt from No. 50 to the Top 10 in four years and her determination is similar to mine. “Secondly, Vanderbilt seemed to be ideal,” Lawrence continued. “I wanted a smaller school with good academics and it felt perfect when I visited there.” Lawrence is an outstanding all-around athlete, competing nationally and internationally in tennis, figure skating, handball and skiing. She is fluent in German, French, Luxembourgish, English and Greek and is now studying Spanish. She currently attends the David Leadbetter Academy in Florida. She had a first place finish at the IIAJC Qualifier and was second at the AJGA Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic and the IIAJC Tournament. |
