10/6/2006 Vanderbilt shot a 13-over par 301 to grab an early lead after first round action Friday at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The 54-hole event continues Saturday at the UNC Finley Golf Course (Par 72, 6,285 yards). The Commodores played steady throughout the day despite lightning and rainy conditions that delayed the start by more than two hours and required a shotgun-start format. Vanderbilt holds a one-stroke lead over Tennessee (302) and a two-shot advantage over Duke (303) and Virginia (303). “The team did a great job of playing its own game and not letting anything affect us,” Vanderbilt head coach Martha Richards Freitag said. “We were patient and focused and didn’t let the weather or the slower pace of play become a distraction.” Four Commodores are within four shots of the lead owned by Duke’s Jennie Lee, who posted an even-par 72. Vanderbilt senior Chris Brady is tied for fifth with five other players following a 2-over par 74. Brady birdied two of her first four holes and ended the day with 12 pars. Junior Liebelei Lawrence is one shot behind Brady tied for 11th at 3-over par after posting a 3-over par 75. Birdies on the third and 12th holes have Lawrence in contention. Unlike Brady and Lawrence, Concolino did not enjoy a quick start but rallied to card a 4-over par 76. She shot even-par on her final nine holes, including a birdie on No. 13. Concolino and senior Kristen Svicarovich, who also posted a 76, are tied with 11 other players for 21st place. Svicarovich was at even-par after nine holes, before missing some opportunities down the stretch. “Chris got off to a strong start but left some shots out on the course near the end of the round,” Freitag said. “Jacqui got off to a slow start but finished fast. Liebelei was steady throughout the day.” Second round play begins Saturday at 8 a.m. CT. Live scoring for the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com.
