Women's golf hits left coast for Stanford event

The Commodore women’s golf team closes their fall campaign with another tough test, this time at the Stanford Intercollegiate, hosted by Condoleeza Rice, this Friday through Sunday in Palo Alto, Calif. Vanderbilt, ranked number 12 in the latest poll, will face off against nine other top 25 teams, including the number one (UCLA), number two (USC), number three (Stanford), and number five (Washington) teams in the country.

Play begins for Vanderbilt at 8:30 a.m. Pacific time on Friday, with the Commodores paired with Oregon State and California in the opening round. The Stanford University Golf Course will be set up as a par-71, 6,130-yard format this week.

The 16-team field includes No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 USC, No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 Washington, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 12 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Kentucky, No. 23 Northwestern, No. 24 Auburn, No. 25 California, No. 30 Oregon, No. 36 Georgia, No. 42 UC Davis, San Jose State, Oregon State and Washington State.

The Commodores will send senior Rene Sobolewski, junior Kendall Martindale, sophomore Jenny Hahn, and freshmen Simin Feng and Antonia Scherer to compete in the tournament.

The Commodores will be playing in their 13th consecutive Stanford Intercollegiate, and in 2013, participated in the regular season tournament and the NCAA West Regional at Stanford, where they finished third. Vanderbilt won the 2006 edition of the event, finished runner-up in 2011, 2002, and 2001, and have finished in the top five on six different occasions.
