Women's Golf Finishes Fifth at Fall Preview

9/24/2006

Vanderbilt sophomore Jacqui Concolino posted a 1-under par 71 Sunday to tie for fourth place at the NCAA Women’s Golf Fall Preview in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Concolino ended the event at even par (70+75+71=216), finishing five strokes behind tournament medalist Nicole Smith of Tennessee (67+75+69=211), who was 3-under on the final day. Georgia’s Mallory Hetzel (73+72+70=215) and Virginia’s Leah Wigger (71+73+71=215) tied for second place.

The result gave Concolino her seventh Top 10 finish in 12 career tournaments. She finished one shot from posting a top 10 finish two weeks ago at the Mason Rudolph Championship, Vanderbilt’s first tournament of the fall.

Vanderbilt recorded its best team round of the early season Sunday, carding a 3-over par 291 to finish in fifth place overall. The 19th-ranked Commodores (302+297+291=890) outlasted most squads in the highly competitive tournament that included 12 nationally ranked teams.

Second-ranked Georgia (289+295+285=869) cruised to victory on the final day with a 3-under par 285, finishing nine strokes ahead of second place and top-ranked Duke (306+288+284=878). UCLA (304-298-283=885) carded the best team round of the day with a 5-under par 283 to take third. Auburn (298+290+300=888) was fourth.

Vanderbilt senior Chris Brady and junior Liebelei Lawrence both posted a 1-over par 73. Brady (77+72+73=222) tied for 18th place, shooting par on 13 holes with birdies on No. 3 and No. 18. Lawrence (78+73+73=224) shot 4-under par on the front nine holes with an eagle on No. 2.

Commodore freshman Brooke Goodwin (77+77+74=228) tied for 46th place following a 2-over par 74. Senior Kristen Svicaorvich (78+77+77=232) tied for 59th position.

Vanderbilt returns to action Oct. 6-8 at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
