Women's Golf Climbs to Fourth Nationally

Oct. 27, 2006

Following its second consecutive tournament victory, the Vanderbilt women’s golf team has climbed to fourth nationally in the latest Golfweek magazine poll.

Georgia is listed first in the rankings, followed by two-time defending national champion Duke and third-ranked Arizona State.

Vanderbilt has finished ahead of 48 of the 61 teams it has competed against in four fall tournaments this season, including 37 squads that currently rank among the 50 best in the country.

The Commodores, who entered last week ranked ninth in the nation, rallied to win the Stanford Women’s Intercollegiate on Oct. 22. Vanderbilt finished ahead of both Georgia and Duke in the tournament.

Vanderbilt entered the final round 16-strokes behind tournament host Stanford. Despite the hole, the Commodores shot a school-record 9-under par 275 and finished the three-day tournament with the best score in school history at 855.

Leading the comeback was senior Kristen Svicarovich who was named on Friday, National Player of the Week by Golf World magazine. Svicarovich carded Vanderbilt’s top score during the final round, a career-best 4-under par 67, to climb 17 places in the standings to tie for 10th place. Svicarovich posted six birdies on the day, including four on the back nine. Her 67 was one shot off from tying the school record for a single round.

The medal-play portion of Vanderbilt’s schedule resumes in the spring with the Arizona Wildcat Invitational, Feb. 26-27, in Tucson, Ariz. However, the Commodores will participate in the Collegiate Match Play Championships, Nov. 3-5 in Orlando, Fla.
