ORLANDO, Fla. — Fourth-seeded Vanderbilt outlasted No. 13 seed Southern Methodist 3-2 then topped No. 12 seed LSU 3-1-1 on Friday to advance to third round action of the Collegiate Match Play Championships at the Eagle Creek Golf Club.
The three-day, double elimination, tournament continues Saturday when Vanderbilt takes on top-seeded Georgia.
The Commodores edged a stubborn SMU squad in the first round. Commodore senior Chris Brady secured Vanderbilt’s victory with a chip in on the final hole to complete her rally from a four-hole deficit to SMU’s Kate Anderson.
Sophomore Jacqui Concolino defeated Lacey Jones 2 and 1 and junior Liebelei Lawrence cruised to a 6 and 5 win over Ashley Deatherage to account for Vanderbilt’s other points against SMU. Senior Kristen Svicarovich dropped her match with Jennifer Ackerson, 5 and 4 while junior Julie Bartholomew battled, but lost to Sarah Dodson, 3 and 2.
Later in the day, the Commodores won three singles matches and halved another en route to defeating Southeastern Conference rival LSU. Concolino led throughout her match with Rebecca Kuhn, recording a 4 and 2 win. Like Concolino, Brady never trailed while notching a 6 and 4 victory over Nicola Eaton. Lawrence registered an easy win over Caroline Martens, 7 and 6. Svicarovich halved her match with Nicola Eaton while Bartholomew lost to LSU’s Kim Meck, 6 and 5.
